Which one to choose
You transcribe many hours a month → TurboScribe
With an unlimited flat rate, beyond a few hours a month any pay-per-minute service ends up more expensive. Its free plan (3 files a day up to 30 minutes) is also generous for testing. It's the logical choice for podcasters with several shows, agencies or researchers with dozens of interviews a month.
You want an assistant in your meetings → Otter or Notta
Both connect to Zoom, Teams and Google Meet, join the meeting, transcribe live and generate summaries. If your problem is day-to-day meetings rather than individual files, they're more convenient. Otter has a generous free tier (300 minutes a month) but conversations are capped at 30 minutes.
You need certifiable accuracy → Rev or Happy Scribe
They offer human-reviewed transcription (Rev at $1.99/min; Happy Scribe from €1.75/min). It's far more expensive than automatic transcription, but it's what a court, a demanding academic publication or a zero-error client requires.
You already pay for Microsoft 365 → Word
Word for the web and desktop lets you upload an audio file and transcribe it, with up to 300 minutes per user per month included in Microsoft 365. For light use it may be enough without paying anything extra; the monthly cap and the lack of subtitle export are its weak points.
You can code and have a good GPU → Whisper
Whisper, OpenAI's model, is open source: you can run it for free on your own computer. It's the same kind of model many tools use (us included, with Whisper large-v3). In exchange, you have to install it, you need a decent graphics card so it doesn't take hours, and you won't get a synced editor or convenient exports.
You transcribe now and then → Sonorarium
If you transcribe an interview this month, two meetings the next and nothing over the summer, a monthly subscription doesn't pay off. What to check before choosing
- How many hours you transcribe a month, and whether it's regular. That changes the real price the most.
- Languages. Make sure yours is well supported, especially if it isn't English.
- Maximum length per file. Long lectures and interviews can exceed some free plans' limits.
- Speaker identification. Essential for some interviews and minutes; irrelevant for dictation or subtitles.
- Export. Word for documents, SRT/VTT for video.
- Privacy. Where your files are processed, how long they're kept and whether they're used for training.

Is automatic transcription as good as human transcription? With good audio, very close. With noise, strong accents or overlapping voices, a human review still makes a difference.
